NCPG JOINS PANEL AT THE FTC ABOUT LOOT BOXES, GAMBLING, AND CONSUMER PROTECTIONS
The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), the leading national organization for people and their families who are affected by problem gambling and gambling addiction, is participating in a workshop about loot boxes at the Federal Trade Commission on August 7, 2019.
“NCPG looks forward to participating in the conversation with the FTC about loot boxes, gambling, and consumer protections,” said Keith Whyte, Executive Director of NCPG. “Research shows that many loot box systems meet criteria for gambling and may become a pathway to problem gambling. We know that youths exposed to gambling at a young age are more likely to develop a gambling disorder as they age. The FTC workshop provides the opportunity for multiple stakeholders to share their expert viewpoints and raise awareness about the potential negative aspects of loot boxes on the consumers.”
On August 7, 2019, the FTC is hosting a workshop, Inside the Game: Unlocking the consumer issues surrounding loot boxes, starting at 10am ET in Washington, DC. Three panels throughout the day feature different perspectives and discussions about loot boxes. NCPG joins Panel 3: A Level Playing Field – What’s Fair Game? which addresses in-game microtransactions and ways to protect consumers. In addition to NCPG, panel 3 includes Common Sense Media, Consumer Reports, and Entertainment Software Rating Board, moderated by the FTC Division of Advertising Practices.
The FTC loot box workshop carries over momentum from NCPG’s 33rd National Conference on Gambling Addiction & Responsible Gambling where diverse stakeholders from 42 states and 14 countries gathered to discuss multiple topics related to problem gambling. A responsible gambling and regulation session focused specifically on loot boxes, led by Chris Hansford, Political Engagement Director at Consumers for Digital Fairness, as well as a PED Talk by Cam Adair, Founder of Game Quitters, entitled Video Game Addiction Masterclass.
